The first song from California King - Where We Belong

There are songs you write because you have something to say.

And then there are songs that seem to find you when you're not quite sure what you're trying to say yet.

“Where We Belong” was one of those songs.

Today, I’m finally letting it out into the world.

The song began years ago, long before I knew where the road was going to take me. I wrote it, rewrote it, recorded it, mixed it, listened to it again, and wondered more than once if it was actually finished.

Maybe I was asking the wrong question.

Maybe the song wasn't waiting to be finished.

Maybe I was.

Where do we belong?

I've spent a lot of my life moving between places, people, music and different versions of myself.

California has been home for a long time. Ventura gave me friendships, art, music, memories, hard lessons and more stories than I could ever fit into one record.

But eventually, something started pulling at me.

Not away from everything I loved.

Toward something I couldn't quite explain.

So I followed it.

And now I'm in Memphis.

A long way from California.

A new city. New streets. New musicians. New rooms. New conversations. A new chapter that, in many ways, feels like an old dream finally catching up with me.

And somewhere along the way, I realized something:

Maybe belonging isn't about finding the right place.

Maybe it's about finding the people who make a place feel like home.

The song behind the song

“Where We Belong” became the doorway into California King.

The record grew out of a period of change, uncertainty, reflection and reinvention. Somewhere in the middle of everything falling apart, the songs started showing up.

I made a decision I've come back to many times in my life:

When it all falls apart, make art.

That's what I did.

The result is California King—a record about the road, relationships, memory, change, California, and the strange and beautiful process of figuring out what's next.

“Where We Belong” is the first step.

From California to Memphis

There's something fitting about releasing this song while beginning a new life in Memphis.

I didn't move here because I had everything figured out.

I moved because I didn't.

Sometimes you have to leave the familiar to hear yourself clearly.

Sometimes you have to take the long way.

Sometimes you have to get in the car, bring the guitar, follow the music and see what happens.

That's what this next chapter is about.

I'm calling it California King: The Road to Memphis.

And I'm going to document the journey as it happens—the music, the people, the places, the mistakes, the discoveries and all the unexpected moments along the way.

Because the destination isn't really the point.

The journey is the story.

This song belongs to you now

One of the strangest and most beautiful things about making music is the moment you have to let go.

For months or years, a song belongs to the person who wrote it.

Then you release it.

And suddenly someone else hears it.

Maybe they hear something completely different than you intended.

Maybe it reminds them of someone.

Maybe it becomes the soundtrack to a drive, a breakup, a new beginning, a Friday night, a long conversation or a moment they didn't expect.

That's when the song changes.

That's when it becomes yours.

So wherever you're listening from today, I hope you'll take “Where We Belong” with you.

Play it on the highway.

Play it with your friends.

Play it when you're starting over.

Play it when you're finally beginning to feel at home.

And if you want, tell me where you were when you heard it for the first time.

Because maybe that's what this song has been trying to tell me all along:

We don't always find where we belong.

Sometimes we build it together.

Thanks for being here at the beginning.

There's a lot more road ahead.

Come along for the ride.
